Gerrit Goss opened his Landscape Architecture and Design firm in 2011 with the simple goal of creating beautiful and livable landscapes for his clients. From his main office in Venice, California, Gerrit works all over the country to create inspiring, usable residential and small scale commercial landscapes that maximize the potential of adjacent outdoor spaces to suit each individual clients’ needs. Rather than allowing it to serve simply as a backdrop for the built environment, Gerrit’s work strives to bring elements of the natural world to the core of his projects. Whether through the subtle framing of a distant view along an entry drive or the creation of a new outdoor garden ‘room’ immediately accessible from one’s house, Gerrit Goss Landscape Architecture and Design lends order to—and enhances—previously overlooked exterior spaces and natural features in a way that compliments and expands how we live outdoors today. Sometimes seen by others as an impediment, Gerrit’s designs aim to acknowledge and respect and—where appropriate—celebrate the importance of natural systems and the use of native or naturalized plant material. Gerrit’s exposure to some of the world’s most inspiring landscapes through his extensive domestic and international travel further enriches his designs. Gerrit has found that a successful project uses all of the these tools—and more—to capture the opportunities that exist just beyond our threshold and turn them in to meaningful, viable, beautiful spaces.
Gerrit studied at Rollins College in Florida, where he graduated Cum Laude with a BA degree in Art History. During his time at Rollins, he studied abroad in Florence, Italy, with Syracuse University. It was there that his interest in gardens, through exposure to Italian Renaissance Villas in and around Florence and Tuscany, took root. In 1997, he graduated from the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture with his Master of Landscape Architecture degree, again having spent time studying in Italy—this time in Venice. The next several years were spent in New York, working first for Robert A. M. Stern Architects and then for Madison Cox Design, a boutique garden design firm with an international client list. In 2005, Mr. Goss joined the Los Angeles office of Ft Lauderdale based EDSA. Leaders in the hospitality and resort design market, EDSA presented Mr. Goss with the opportunity to travel extensively and coordinate closely with other top architects, golf course architects, and designers as he managed large scale commercial projects located in beautiful resort destinations around the world.
Mr. Goss is a licensed Landscape Architect and LEED certified.
