A request to enhance, refresh, and simplify a series of planting beds surrounding an existing pool, this planting project relies heavily on the hardy perennials and shrubs of coastal New England. The palette was chosen to minimize maintenance and water use and to peak in July and August, when the pool sees the most activity. A small area of gravel and local boulders was included to create additional interest within the largest planting bed at the end of the pool. Small ornamental trees- Sweetbay Magnolia and Shad- anchor corners of the beds and other prominent locations. Flowering shrubs- Oakleaf and Lacecap Hydrangea, Clethra, Caryopteris, Blueberry, and Rose of Sharon- provide height and a backdrop for a host of summer’s favorite perennials.
